![]() This is contrary to what I said in this question and contrary to my comments to the Accepted Answer. If an App allows you to select its output device, and you select one that allows volume control, you CAN control it even when a DP or HDMI monitor is connected. Proxy Audio Device seems to work pretty well so far. Volume control works fine on Windows so I assume either there's some quirk in MonitorControl, or Windows is actually not using CEC. MonitorControl did not work for me for some reason - I'm using a TESmart KVM switch and a Dell monitor. So my suggestion is try MonitorControl, if that does not work use Proxy Audio Device. SoundFlower is very old (2014) and I did manage to get it to work, but it stops working after about an hour.īlackHole is similar to SoundFlower but unfortunately does not support outputting to another audio device so you can't use it for this purpose. I included SoundFlower and BlackHole for completeness but the DO NOT WORK. This was specifically created to solve this problem. Proxy Audio Device - creates a virtual device like SoundFlower.BlackHole - similar software to SoundFlower.SoundFlower - creates a virtual device with a software volume control that can route sound to another device (your monitor).MonitorControl - uses actual CEC commands to control the volume (and brightness) on the monitor. At that location the volume controls remain active and they control the internal speaker in the laptop as they should. In another location I use the same cable to plug in to Dell monitors with Displayport but without built in speakers in the monitors. Using a Thunderbolt to Displayport cable, plugging in to a Dell monitor with speakers. Some additional info: It's a Macbook Pro 13" 2018 version. Is there no way to control the volume of an app when an external speaker is connected even if the app is not using the external speaker? Is Apple assuming that if I have external speakers I am so much better using their own volume control that I have to be forced to do it? That is annoying because the monitor's volume controls are buried in terrible menus accessed by terrible buttons on the back of the monitor.Īlso, if I am inside an app where I can select the audio device and I select the Mac's internal speakers, the volume controls are STILL disabled. so who knows. When I plug my Mac into a DisplayPort monitor that has loudspeakers, the Mac's volume controls become disabled. There's been whispers of 64GB memory being at least theoretically possible although I've also read that there's no platform suitable for the thermals of the macbook pro's that will allow that much ram. Some people find the experience almost transparent.įingers crossed the 16" macbook pro is imminent. How much this effects you comes down to your own personal workflows. And for whatever reason, I find I still work slower on the laptop due to the screen size / resolution (and how that effects moving around sessions etc!). Funny thing with a laptop though - it doesn't cut down on a tonne of cables / gear. 32GB of ram can go a long way if you build into your workflows "low ram" alternative pathways. I also have a 2018 macbook pro, which really can do a tonne of work that even 5 years ago I would have never expected a laptop to be able to do. Getting cables that are close to the exact size you need is REALLY helpful (they are heavier than you think) and having a good checklist works wonders early on when getting used to it all. You get very quick in learning how to set everything up / knowing exactly what cables you need. The 10 mins setup / pack down does get a bit frustrating but to me it is worth the time. The mac pro goes in its own case within the case - and I've never had an issue with carrying it around this way. It means I can work on ANYTHING that is currently going on no matter where I am. ![]() It takes around 10 mins for me to setup, but I have the mac, keyboard, mouse, a thunderbolt hub, babyface pro, mini keyboard, trackball, faders, 24" 4K monitor, headphones, external SSD for samples (and occasionally genelec 8010 speakers) all packed in a single case which adds up to about 25KG. ![]() When the trash cans came out I quickly grabbed one and realised that they were great for using on the road. The new mac mini's are great with being able to have 64GB ram - and just having one VEP slave will solve a lot of the issues I had. ![]() It worked fine - but took a LOT of work to get to a stage of being easy to use / create with. So I have been in your world a while - needing powerful rigs on the road.īack in 2011 I had 2 (and then another 2) mac mini's running VEP each with 16GB ram, and a macbook pro as the workstation.
